respiratory distress syndrome

Cards (13)

  • Respiratory distress syndrome, also known as surfactant deficiency disorder or hyaline membrane disease
  • is a common breathing disorder affecting newborns, particularly those born prematurely. It occurs when the baby's lungs haven't fully developed and lack sufficient surfactant.
    Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • it is a crucial substance in the lungs that acts like a soapy film made in the lungs at about 26 weeks of pregnancy
    Surfactant
  • It coats the tiny air sacs (alveoli) and helps them stay inflated, preventing them from collapsing when you exhale
    Surfactant
  • Pathophysiology of Respiratory Distress
Prematurity, Alveolar Collapse, Ventilation Perfusion Mismatch, Inflammatory response, pulmonary edema, and increased work of breathing
  • Complications of RDS may include intraventricular hemorrhage due to strain on the circulatory system and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, characterized by chronic breathing difficulties even after the resolution of initial RDS symptoms.
  • Risks for RDS
    • Siblings that had rds
