Respiratory distress syndrome, also known as surfactant deficiency disorder or hyaline membrane disease
is a common breathing disorder affecting newborns, particularly those born prematurely. It occurs when the baby's lungs haven't fully developed and lack sufficient surfactant.
Respiratory Distress Syndrome
it is a crucial substance in the lungs that acts like a soapy film made in the lungs at about 26 weeks of pregnancy
Surfactant
It coats the tiny air sacs (alveoli) and helps them stay inflated, preventing them from collapsing when you exhale
Surfactant
Pathophysiology of Respiratory Distress
Prematurity, Alveolar Collapse, Ventilation Perfusion Mismatch, Inflammatory response, pulmonary edema, and increased work of breathing
Complications of RDS may include intraventricular hemorrhage due to strain on the circulatory system and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, characterized by chronic breathing difficulties even after the resolution of initial RDS symptoms.
