    1. The parable indirectly addresses the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of the religious leaders who criticized Jesus for associating with sinners
    2. The older brother's resentful attitude towards his father's forgiveness mirrors the attitude of the religious leaders, challenging their mindset by portraying the father's unconditional love and acceptance of both sons, regardless of their actions

    • Pharisees and teachers of the law criticized Jesus, saying "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them"
  • After Speaking the Parable of the Lost Coin
    • Jesus follows it with the parable of the prodigal son
    • The longer parable further illustrates God's love for the lost and rejoicing when they repent
    • Jesus uses all three parables (lost sheep, lost coin, prodigal son) to explain why he associates with sinners
    • The parables justify his mission to seek and save the lost, rebuking the Pharisees' self-righteousness
    • They show the heavenly joy and celebration over every repentant sinner who is found
  • Main lesson of the parable
  • Sister Josephine Mondejar Canja: 'The lost coin (silver coin) is represented as a treasure or a precious person, which is you or us. The woman represents God (a woman who never gave up until she found this lost coin). It is all about the precious attention and love of God for each of us. He rejoices when we return to Him (like the woman who calls all her neighbors to join the feast to find her lost coins). So the lesson we learn in this parable is that no matter how dirty and distant we get, God will still love and find us when we are lost and accept and celebrate when we come back to him, for he is our creator and protector'
