• Mauro (1984): In 1969, a US police dept. in California discontinued their traditional paramilitary-style police uniform and adopted a more unorthodox ‘civilian’ style uniform (an attempt to improve police-community relations)
• Mauro (1984): 8 years later the police reverted to the traditional style uniform, claiming that the civilian uniform did not command sufficient respect, and attacks on police doubled - assaults on police dropped steadily when the traditional police uniform was re-introduced
