Kerckhoff and Davis - when selecting from a range of people who are potentiallyavailable we use threefilters to narrow down the choice and produce the bestsuitablerelationship
3 filters:
social demography
similarity in attitudes
complementary
AO1 - FILTER 1
social demography refers to factors such as ethnicgroup, levelofeducation, religion or location. Our dating ability is restricted by our socialcircumstances. Anyone too different will be discounted as a potential partner. The outcome of this filter is homogamy, more likely to form relationship with someone who is socially or culturally similar
AO1 - FILTER 2
similar attitudes were found to be important in the development of romantic relationships but only for those who had been together for less than 18months. Similarity of basic values allows greater and deepercommunication and selfdisclosure. Similarity does not exist, little in common, relationship will fizzle out
AO1 - FILTER 3
Complementary is for long term relationships as need to be able to meet each others needs. They complement each other when they have traits the other lacks. Later stages of the relationships oppositesattract. Its important as gives the partners the feeling that together they form a whole and adds depth to their relationship
