Body temperature

Cards (6)

  • There is a thermoregulatory system in the brain containing receptors that are sensitive to temperature of blood running through the brain, it also receives impulses from the temperature receptors in the skin, giving information abt the skin temperature
  • Body temperature is controlled by negative feedback
  • If temperature receptors sense too high or low core temp the effectors (sweat glands or muscle) will produce a response to counteract the change
  • SOme efectors work antagonistically to achieve a precise temp where one cools and one heats both at the same time, this mechanism allows a more sensitive response
  • When you're too hot
    -hairs like flat
-sweat is produced + evaporates off skin
-blood vessels supplying skin dilate so more blood glows closer to skin surface (vasodilation)
  • when you're too cold
-hairs stand up to trap an insulating layer of air
    -no sweat is produced
-blood vessels supplying skin capillaries constrict to close off skins blood supply (vasoconstriction)
-shivering (muscles contract which needs respiration transferring some energy to warmth)
