  • In interpersonal communication, a good guide to follow is to be as open, empathic, and supportive as you can be
  • When communicating with people from other cultures, it’s best to ignore the differences and treat the other person just as you’d treat members of your own culture
  • Fear of meeting new people is detrimental and must be eliminated
  • When there is conflict, your relationship is in trouble
  • All meaningful relationships experience conflict; relationships are not in trouble when there is conflict, though dealing with conflict ineffectively can often damage the relationship
  • IPC is Relational
  • IPC takes place within a relationship—it has an impact on the relationship; it defines the relationship
  • The way you communicate is determined in great part by the kind of relationship that exists between you and the other person
  • The way you communicate, the way you interact, influences the kind of relationship you develop
  • If you interact with a person in friendly ways, you’re likely to develop a friendship. If you regularly exchange hateful and hurtful messages, you’re likely to develop an antagonistic relationship
  • Interpersonal skills involve interdependent individuals
  • IPC takes place between people who are in some way “connected”
  • Examples of interpersonal relationships
    • Son and father, employer and employee, two sisters, teacher and student, two lovers, two friends, etc
  • Communication within a family is often dyadic—mother to child, father to mother, daughter to s
