  • English, alongside French, is an official language of Canada. According to a 2016 census, English is the first language of 75% of the population and the mother tongue of 57%. It is the majority language of every province aside from Quebec, which has a French-speaking majority, and Nunavut, which has an Inuit language majority.
  • Canadian English mostly resembles American English, but uses features of British English (-ou and -re spellings, borrowed lexis like ‘lorry and flat’) as well as its own Canadian features (‘aboot’ sound)
