Biodiversity of Plants

• Kingdom Plantae is divided into four main groups:

  1. Bryophytes- mosses, liverworts, hornworts
  2. Pteridophytes- ferns
  3. Gymnosperms- conifers, cycads, gnetales and ginkgo
  4. Angiosperms- flowering plants
• Plants are divided according to:

  The dependency on water for reproduction

  The presence/ absence of:

  • vascular tissue (xylem and phloem)
  • true leaves, stems and roots
  • spores or seeds
  • fruits
• Alteration of Generations: during the life cycles of each of the four plant groups, two definitive generations occur

  Gametophyte (sexual-gametes) and Sporophyte (asexual-spores)Generation

  They alternate and give rise to one another
