semantic memory - 'knowing that'
these are memories relating to knowledge about the world. the memories can be related to functions of objects but also abstract ideas such as knowledge of mathematical rules. They begin as episodic memories but as we acquire knowledge, the memory begins to lose its association to the event and becomes a factual memory.
