• The Tet Offensive was a disaster for the Viet Cong because they hoped that the people of South Vietnam would join them and they lost 10,000 fighters
• there were questions in the US about how they had been taken by surprise despite spending $20 billion per year
• US forces retook the towns taken in the Tet Offensive but many civilians were killed and they used lots of artillery, destroying many homes
