  • Limitations:
    • Measures water uptake
    • Cutting plant shoots may damage the plant
    • The plant has no roots so there is no resistance to water being pulled up
  • Measuring the volume of water taken up by the shoot involves calculating the volume of a cylinder (the length of capillary tube); formula: πr^2h,the rate of transpiration is the volume calculated, divided by the time taken (rate = volume/time)
  • Measures water uptake by a leafy cutting and not all water taken up by is lost by transpiration (only ~99% of water), some is used in photosynthesis, other chemical reaction and maintaining cell turgidity so water uptake doesn’t equal water loss
