  • Ferdinand Magellan
    • Born in 1480 in Saborosa, Villa Real, Portugal
    • Came from a wealthy family with strong connections to the Portuguese court
    • Joined the expedition of Francisco d'Almeida to India in 1505
    • Took part in the Portuguese expedition to Morocco in 1512 and was badly wounded
    • Had a serious disagreement with a commanding officer and left the Portuguese service without prior permission in 1512
    • Requested permission from King Manuel of Portugal to sail to the Spice Islands in 1513 but was refused
    • Renounced his Portuguese nationality in 1518 and headed for Spain
    • Convinced King Charles I of Spain to support his voyage to the Spice Islands in 1519
  • First voyage around the World
    1. March 22, 1519: Magellan convinces King Charles I of Spain to support the voyage
    2. Spain provides five ships for the expedition
    3. September 20, 1519: The fleet sails across the Atlantic Ocean to South America and Rio de Janeiro and then starts to search for a passage to the Pacific Ocean
    4. March 1520: The fleet anchors for the winter at Puerto San Julian in Southern Argentina
    5. September 1520: A storm destroys the Santiago and a mutiny breaks out
    6. October 1520: Magellan and his crew resume their voyage on the remaining ships
    7. November 21, 1520: Enters the straits which would be named the Magellan Straits
    8. February 3, 1521: Magellan reaches the Equator
    9. March 6, 1521: Magellan reached the Pacific island of Guam
    10. March 16, 1521: Discovers the Philippines
    11. April 27, 1521: Magellan was killed by natives on the island of Mactan
    12. Only 110 of the original crew members remained, they abandoned one of the ships - the Conception
    13. The Trinidad tried to return back to Spain but was forced to return to the Spice Islands where they were imprisoned by the Portuguese
    14. September 6, 1522: The Victoria reached Sanlucar de Barrameda in Spain with only 18 survivors
