plant hormones

Cards (10)

  • what does the hormone auxin do?
controls growth at the tips of shoots and roots
  • how does auxin work?
controls the growth in response to light - phototropism and gravity -geotropism
  • where is auxin produced?
in the tips and moves backwards to stimulate cell elongation
  • how does the shoot grow towards the light?
the side of the tip that is exposed to more light, more auxin accumulates
this makes the cells grow faster on the shaded side so the shoot bends towards the light
  • how to investigate plant growth responses?
    1. put 10 cress seeds into three Petri dishes, each led moist filter paper
    2. shine a light at one just above and the others from different directions
    3. leave for a week and observe there responses
  • what are the uses for auxin?
    killing weeds
growing cells from tissue culture (produces clones)
    growing cuttings
  • what does gibberellin do?
stimulate seed germination, stem growth and flowering
  • what are the uses for gibberellin?
    controlling dormancy
    inducing flowering
    growing larger fruit
  • what is ethene?
a gas that is produced by aging parts of a plant. it influences the growth of the plant by controlling cell division and stimulates enzymes that cause the fruit to ripen
  • what is ethene used for?
to speed up the ripening of plants or delay it
