Threats from Internal Uprisings

• The black population was growing faster than the white population, barely 1/8 of the population was white in 1980 compared to 1/5 in 1950
• Despite apartheid’s influx control’ policies, more than half of all blacks now lived in towns
• Black opposition seemed impossible to crush - sabotage attacks b MK guerrillas were increasing
• The original vision of an all-white South Africa, with a black population confined to rural ‘homelands’ was obviously not going to happen
