  • Basketball
    A team sport, wherein the objective is to shoot a ball through a basket horizontally positioned to score points while following a set of rules
  • Basketball
    • Usually, two teams of five players play on a marked rectangular court with basket at each width end
  • 13 Original Rules
    • The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands
    2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist)
    3. A player cannot run with the ball
    4. The ball must be held in or between the hands
    5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent
    6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3, 4, and such as described in Rule 5

  • The first ball
    A soccer ball until 1840 when an actual "basketball" was invented, slightly smaller, about thirty inches in diameter
  • The Basket
    • - First baskets were two peach baskets hung from the balcony of the gym
    • In 1906, the peach baskets were replaced by metal baskets with holes in the bottom
    • In 1913, a hoop with a net was invented so the basketball could fall freely to the ground
  • Backboard
    • - Invented in 1893 due to the overzealous spectators interfering with the basketball
    • First backboard was constructed out of wire mesh, then wood, and now it is made from glass

  • The first basketball game
    • Naismith asked his class to play a match in the Armory Street court: 9 versus 9, using a soccer ball and two peach baskets
    • Someone proposed to call it "Naismith Game", but he suggested to name it basketball since basket and ball were equipment used
    • Differences from today's game: peach baskets were closed, balls had to be retrieved manually, small hole was put in the bottom to poke the ball out using a stick
    • Only in 1906 were metal hoops, nets and backboards introduced, and the soccer ball was replaced by a Spalding ball

    • - 1898: National Basketball League founded, participated by six teams
    • 1904: National Basketball League abandoned
    • 1922: First all-African American professional team founded
    • 1922-1928: Celtics dominated the World's Basketball Champions league
