ATP and ADP

Cards (6)

  • ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) is the energy carrier in living cells
  • Cells require energy for chemical reactions, while other reactions release energy
  • ATP is a large molecule made up of an adenosine molecule (enzyme) and three phosphate (P) molecules
  • When energy is required by the cell, ATP is broken down into ADP (Adenosine diphosphate) and a phosphate molecule and energy is released
  • When energy is released in a chemical reaction, it is used to form a bond between ADP and P molecules to form ATP. ATP will release the energy again when needed
  • ATP is formed in the Light Phase, it carries the energy to the dark phase and releases it there
