Need for management/problems

Cards (8)

  • During the 1800s the population in Glasgow grew by around 700,000 people due to the development of the ship building industry and its need for labour (pulled people into city due to job opportunities)
  • Due to huge increase in people moving from areas such as Ireland and rural Scotland for jobs in ship building industry, hundred of tenement blocks were built
  • By the 1950s areas (e.g. The Gorbals) were overcrowded as the cities population was at its highest of 1.1 million, the Gorbals had some of the worst slum conditions in western Europe
  • Flats in the tenements were very small, with dark and damp rooms, which resulted in the growth of mold
  • Tenements were overcrowded with families of up to 10 people in only 1-2 rooms
  • Close proximity of people allowed for diseases (e.g. tuberculosis and bronchitis) to easily spread
  • Tenements were built close to factories as most people who lived in them worked in the factories, this exposed the residents to smoke and chemicals which causes diseases such as asthma
  • They did not have heating, running water, electricity or toilets indoors - the entire tenement had to share 1-2 toilets on the landing or outdoors at the back of the tenement, which was very unsanitary and triggered the spreading of diseases (e.g. cholera)
