• Context


  Eisenhower wanted progress on bringing the Cold War to a conclusion. Khrushchev wanted peaceful coexistence. A thaw was appearing and the summit aimed to capitalise.
• Affect of the U2 crisis

  Tensions were higher than they had been for some time. Khrushchev was very critical of the Eisenhower but Eisenhower merely chose to 'suspend' the flights.

  He stormed out the of the meeting and refused to meet with Eisenhower.
• Did Khrushchev have an ulterior motive?

  It could be argued so. Khrushchev could have capitalised on the U2 crisis because he knew the USSR was more advanced in terms of the arms and space race.
