    Students in Budapest hold demonstrations asking for reform, and Khrushchev appointed reformer Imre Nagy in response. He proposed a programme of radical reform.

  • What happened when Nagy was proclaimed prime minister?
    He called for loyalty towards the Hungarian Communist party, which supported Stalin. Nagy announced the formation of a new government which included non-Communist Party members.

    Soviet forces were withdrawn from Budapest.

    Imre Nagy announces that Hungary is leaving the Warsaw Pact.

    He feared that other Warsaw Pact members would follow Hungary's example.

    America made no official comment
    They did not interfere fearing being seen as attacking the USSR.
    It showed that the USSR could do as they wished behind the Iron Curtain.

    Issue was raised on 4th November and they held a vote for the removal of Soviet troops. The USSR simply vetoed it.
