Hemolytic uremic syndrome

• rare but serious disease affecting the kidneys and blood clotting functions of infected children
• signs and symptoms: lethargy, blood in urine, oliguria, petechiae and bruising
• cause destruction of red blood cells, which can cause kidney failure
• occurs as a complication of infection most commonly E. coli
• children will be treated with IV fluids, blood products and dialysis if kidney failure occurs
