  • One of the main criticisms of the judiciary is that it’s dominuted by elderly white upper class males and as such they are out of touch with the current issues and concerns of those appearing in front of them. In April 2020 76% of all court judges were 50 and 40% were over 60 judges aren’t representative of younger adults and therefore can lead to harsh sentencing and misunderstanding
  • A possible solution to recruiting younger judges who are just as capable as older judges to perform the role would be to introduce ‘ a career judiciary’. THis is where they would practise as a l;awyer first but instead are trained as judges. Once qualified they would sit in junior posts and then hope to be promoted up the judicial ladder. By enrolling judges on a judicial career this would mean that judges would have far more training in the specific skills required of a judge and would result in creating a more youthful judiciary
  • Women in the judiciary: 32 percent of all court judges were women and 26 percent of superior judges were women.
The increasing number of women judges oaa partly due to the open and competitive method of selection. But it is also partly due to the fact that there is an increasing number of women barristers and solicitors, and so more possible applicants for judicial posts. Nevertheless women judges and in particular those in superior roles are still vastly under-represented.
  • There has also been an increase over the past twenty years in the number of judges from BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) backgrounds. In April 2020 8 percent of all court judges were from a BAME background, and this is  still very much within the minority.
