Module 1.3 (Storage memory and processing)

Cards (16)

  • memory:
    1. computer holds all programs and data temporarily while working on it
    2. volatile meaning work can get lost if there is no power
    3. faster to access
    4. electronic
    5. measured in low GB (1-64GB)
  • Storage:
    1. holds programs and data permanently
    2. much slower than memory
    3. measures from GB to low TB (1TB=1024GB)
    4. either magnetic or electronic
    5. non-volatile meaning that if there is no power the computer is still able to keep all the work
  • RAM(random access memory) which comes in sticks called DIMMS (dual in-line memory modules) also plugged into motherboard
  • ROM(Read Only Memory) is a type of non-volatile memory that stores data permanently.
  • HDD(Hard Disk Drive)-slower and more mechanical
SSD(solid state drive)-faster and more electronic
  • online storage allows you to backup your files and access them from anywhere even when computer is hacked
  • advantages of online storage:
    1. saves space
    2. easy access
    3. easy to share files
    4. easy to backup
    disadvantages:
    1. no control over backup
    2. can lose everything if the company is bankrupt
    3. accessible if you have internet
  • difference between online storage and cloud is that clouds run on an actual server whereas online storage involves storing files online
  • backing up involves copying the data from the computer to a backup device. its easy to restore data for backup media and is quick to make one
  • popular backup strategy:
    1. flash drives
    2. portable hard drives
    3. online backup services
  • offsite backup is a backup of data that is stored at a remote location from the original source
  • managing backups could be a problem because of the amount of storage space that is needed. a problem with CDs and DVDs is that they are outdated and scratches easily make it lose its data
  • disk defragmentation is the process of rearranging the fragmented files on a disk to make them more efficient
  • motherboard is a large circuit board containing connections from all components and allows them to comunicate
  • CPU known as the central processing unit does the processing and is mainly measured in GHz and results in higher performance
  • EEprom (Electronic erasable programmable read only memory)
