Germans were also interested in Southeast Africa → German exploration in 1884
But this was of a bigger concern to the British, for the same reason that Natal was a concern. It was too strategic.
→ As a result, the British annexed Santa Lucia Bay
1883 - Adolf Franz Lüderitz purchases a bay in Namibia
Germany wasn’t a state on its own yet during this time. German colonisation started with businessmen who settled in places to do business.
Adolf settles in Southwest Africa, now Namibia. He first purchases a bay, a few days later he buys a whole plot of land.
→ Treaties between a private person and local people
1884 - Reichsschutz and Protectorate
After Berlin learns about the success in Africa that Adolf Lüderitz had found, they promise support to the businessmen and ask Britain about their claims.
But Britain wasn’t so worried about that coastline.
So Berlin gained Reichsschutz → political protection
