The Glass Ceiling

Cards (2)

  • The glass ceiling is a term for the social barrier preventing women from being promoted to top jobs in management. The glass ceiling is called this because women can see the promotion/opportunities above them but struggle to reach them. There are no laws which prevent them reaching these goals, but social norms make it more difficult for them.
  • Women can often be denied jobs because of the presumptions that they may need to take time off to have a baby or for childcare needs. Similarly, women can be denied promotions because they have missed out on experience when off on maternity leave and have been given no support on their return to work to upskill, allowing their male counterparts to surpass them.
