Avoidance of people, places and things associated with the traumatic experience
Emotional detachment or numbness
Social withdrawal
For children 6 years old and younger, signs and symptoms may also include:
Re-enacting the traumatic event or aspects of the traumatic event through play
Frightening dreams that may or may not include aspects of the traumatic event
The four subcategories of symptoms in PTSD include reexperiencing the trauma through dreams or recurrent and intrusivethoughts, avoidance, negativecognition or thoughts, being on guard, or hyperarousal (Shalev & Marmar, 2017).
The victim feels a numbing of general responsiveness and shows persistent signs of increased arousal such as insomnia, hyperarousal or hypervigilance, irritability, or angry outbursts.
