  • Rotations

  • Set Plays
    Special strategies that are used in offense designed by the coach
  • Screens
    Also known as pick, is an offensive maneuver that sets up the player whereas the player positions themselves in order for the ball handler to create space and prevent the movement of the defender
  • Posting up
    Where the player moves into the post area to receive a pass from a teammate and score a basket
  • Cuts
    Players making a run from one area of the offensive court to the another, usually from outside towards the basket
  • Isolation Plays
    An offensive strategy whereas the player in possession of the ball isolates a weak player on defense to attack the basket
  • Pick and rolls
    An action taken by two players in order to open up space and create a scoring chance
  • Fast breaks
    A fast paced transition play where the defense is outnumbered
  • Press Breaks
    Set plays that are designed to beat a full court or half court press by the opposing team
  • Tempo
    Important to know how to play at different paces and speeds. The game can be sped up or slowed down depending on the progress of the game

    Gives extra possession to the offensive team and an opportunity to score second-chance points
  • Boxing out
    The action of the player to use their body in order to prevent the opposing team from reaching the ball
  • Defensive Rebounding
    • Every defender must box out and prevent the opponent from getting the second shot in the possession
  • Fouling
    • Playing defense without fouling is another huge part of the defensive strategy that players must understand in order to be successful
  • Traps
    A defensive strategy in which two defenders continuously guard the offensive player with the ball
  • Man to man defense
    The most basic form used in basketball whereas a defender is assigned to guard a specific offensive player
  • Zone Defense
    A defensive strategy where the coach can assigned designated areas of the court (zones) for each player to guard
  • Press Defense
    Press defense try to force the opponent to make a mistake and turnover the ball. It can be either a man to man defense or zone defenses
  • Combination Defense
    Hybrid strategies that combine both man to man defense and zone defenses
