Scotland

Cards (6)

  • Scotland was given the most power out of all the devolved bodies due to the strong Nationalist movement. Including, health, education and agriculture
  • Scotland has gained more powers since the 2014 Scottish independence Referendum in order to satisfy calls for more authority and prevent need for independence. Particularly in the Scotland Act 2016 as this gave Scottish Parliament further powers such as tax rates and bands (fiscal devolution)
  • Scottish Parliament was created by the Scotland Act 1998 with legislative and tax varying powers and has the most powers out of all bodies
  • SNP have been in government since 2007
  • 2022 Supreme court ruled that the Scotland Act doesn't give Scotland Parliament the power to unilaterally legislate for an independence referendum, instead it is a reserved power of the UK Parliament, Showing the power the Supreme Court has at clarifying the different parts of the UK's political system
  • There are few powers that can be further devolved to Scotland as it already holds great amounts of power, the only way for them to get further powers is independence which is unlikely after the first referendum in 2016 regardless if the votes would be different
