With something like assault, restorative justice may involve communication between offender and victim - where the victim can express how they were affected and the offender can express their remorse and apologise.

    • Restorative justice only works if both offender and victim consent to the program, which limits its potential applications. It's also highly important that restorative justice programs don't cause the victim any further trauma.

    A meta-analysis by Latimer et al (2005) found restorative justice programs resulted in greater victim satisfaction, great offender satisfaction, and lower rates of recidivism compared to custodial sentencing and probation. However, this effect could be the result of selection bias: restorative justice programs are voluntary, so offenders involved in them will already be motivated to change
