Representative sample: why is this a strength and how
Van ijzendoorn + k; had a large sample of almost 1990 children + their parent; this large sample from a no. of varying countries leads to a wider + more representative sample of differing cultures + people within them. This grants the research greater external validity and internal validity as it reduces the impact of anomalous results, thus allowing for greater generalisability
Another strength is that the Meta-a consisted of many indigenous psychologists + they included researchers native to country e.g gottesman for german research + takahasi for Japan. This reduces potential issues faced by cross-cultural research as no language/cultural misunderstandings + greater understanding of child-rearing p's. Thus allowing for greater accuracy and generalisability
Imposed etic due to method of ss (think GERMANY VS UK - REUNION BEHAVIOURS)
Limitation has been proposed due to imposed etic in methodology of SS, as it does not take into account cultural variations, for example, in UK or USA a lack of reaction at reunion behaviours would suggest insecure-avoidant, however in Germany, this behaviour would be interpreted as independence rather than insecurity, thus suggesting that the SS methodology may not be representative when applied to differing cultures
