After WW2, football became one of the most popular sports within the FRG and preformed a significant role in helping to provide West Germany with a sense of identity.
The West German team developed a well deserved reputation for efficiency, team work and flair, which many saw as fundamental characteristics of the FRG itself.
In 1954, West Germany won the FIFA World Cup and with the progress made with Adenauer's political and economic policies, helped raise national pride. The team won the tournament for the second time in 1974 when it acted as host.
Principal players, such as Franz Beckenbauer, became both national and international icons of FRG success.
