• • historically know for wool and apples, highly agricultural
  • wool industry declined in the 1880w due to compitition from the north - hereford is now celebrated for is cider and beef cattle
• remains foccused on admin - hospital built in 1940 and technology collage opened in 1948
• 2014 farmers market closed and was replaced buy old market cattle shop
• hereford is not affluent compared to other southern cities - but generally quite affluent - south of river often more deprived
• why is the south more deprived:

  • mai paying tertiary jobs are based in the north - council offices, hospitals, colleges - evidenced by the ang income being ~ £20,900 - 6k below average
  • more places for the grey pound (£320B of the economy - 29% of herefrd are over 75s) to be spent - shops, parks, markets
