• + Damilola Taylor murder location doesnt follow CPTED; he was killed in an open stairwell with lots of exits (easy access), the area wasn’t well cared for by its residents (territoriality) and there were no CCTV cameras (surveillance).
• + Research shows a higher crime rate in cities with high rise blocks than those with low level buildings.
• -Because crime is hard to commit in one area, it might simply just be displaced to other areas.
• -CPTED focuses on preventing outsiders from committing crimes but its not just outsiders committing crime (in the case of defending areas from the outside).
• -CPTED only focuses on prevention by design; in areas reputation rather than design may cause a higher crime rate.
• -Some places may be defensible but not defended; they have security cameras but they don’t work or no one has access to them.
• -CPTED; social factors may change the way in which we interact with spaces and how we use them. (territoriality).
