+ Broken Windows Theory: by policing the individual (like bad neighbourhoods) it’ll give them less reasons to commit crimes, prevent deviants from becoming criminals.
+ Operant Conditioning: getting an ASBO is seen as a punishment so it reinforces good social norms and behaviour in society.
+ Rational Choice Theory; people won’t want to get an ASBO so won't commit antisocial behaviour in fear of getting caught. The consequences would outweigh the rewards.
-Interactionists suggest ASBOs don’t work but instead worsen the problem. People would know who has an ASBO which would lead to labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy so they would get more ASBOs for petty reasons. Some may view ASBO’s as rewards ie. the ASBO shirts.
+Interactionists also argue ASBOs can also be seen as a positive feature, people wouldn’t want to be labelled as an ASBO so would avoid anti-social behaviour summary offences. Furthermore, ASBOs can prevent secondary deviance: the act wouldn't be labelled as deviant; its not a criminal label so it aids in rehabilitation of the offender.
