    In 1559, Elizabeth liked crucifixes and wanted to keep them - also as not to anger Catholics. However, some Puritan bishops threatened to resign and she backed down
  • Vestments Controversy
    In 1565, Elizabeth began her attack on those who refused to conform to her Settlement- not all clergy were wearing what she had demanded. Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, published a Book of Advertisement, instructing clergy to wear a surplice and cope. 37 priests were dismissed as they refused to wear special vestments
  • John Stubbs
    In 1579, he criticised the queen's marriage talks. His right hand was cut off and he was jailed for 18 months
  • Marprelate Tracts
    In 1588-89, a series of anonymous pamphlets containing strong complaints about the church and bishops - people were offended and Puritans lost support.
  • Strickland
    In April 1571, called for a new BOCP and the banning of vestments, rings in marriage and kneeling in communion. Elizabeth closed Parliament and he was banned from the HoC
  • John Field and Thomas Wilcox
    In 1572, published books calling for a presbyterian form of government with Parish by Parish ruling - would have weakened Elizabeth's power - fired from Cambridge and exiled to Geneva
  • Anthony Cope
    In 1586-87, he called for the abolishment of all Bishops and the Geneva BOCP by Calvin. Confined in the tower of London and Elizabeth shut down Parliament

    Vision of how the national Church should be run - Presbyterians wanted no Bishops which would've weakened Elizabeth's power, Question Elizabeth's decisions and authority - authority was religion based - a challenge to her church was a challenge to her, Power/Influence as a group in the country - Puritans were upper class and so could influence Elizabeth more
