  • DEFINITION - Defining is understanding the
    essence of a word, an idea, a
    concept, or an expression.
  • PURPOSE - To give information to the
    readers as to what the author
    intends to explain.
  • DENOTATION - the primary, explicit, or literal
    definition of a word.
  • CONNOTATION - secondary meaning of a
    word.
  • ANALYSIS - the process of breaking down a
    concept into its constituent parts.
  • COLLOCATION - means that there are words or
    expressions that are usually
    almost immediately associated
    with the concept you are trying to
    define.
  • COMPARISON - is associating the word or
    expression you are trying to define
    with something else not necessarily
    synonymous with it.
  • CONTRAST - understanding how at
    least two similar concepts
    are different from each
    other.
  • ETYMOLOGY - is the history of a word, explains the evolution of a
    word or how it has come
    to be.
  • Exemplification - is defining
    something by giving examples.
  • Illustration - giving an example
    and focusing on it to elaborate
    on the concept you are trying to
    define
  • DEFINITION- personal interpretation of the author
    to an abstract and multifaceted
    concept.
  • FUNCTION -it answers the question, what it is used for?ā€Ø
  • NEGATION - a technique that you can use to
    define a word or a concept by
    explaining what it is not.
  • SYNONYMS - are a single word or phrase
    that share almost the same
    meaning with the concept you
    are trying to define.
  • EXEMPLIFICATION - elaboration or explanation by
    giving examples.
  • VISUAL
    ILLUSTRATION - appeals to the sense of sight. use to concretize abstract
    concepts like poverty and
    love.
  • FACTS - these are concepts, ideas,
    and statements that are
    generally assumed true, real,
    and/or existing.
  • OPINIONS - these are individual
    interpretations of certain
    people on certain events,
    situations, ideas, and
    concepts.
  • ANECDOTES - brief narratives within a piece of
    writing.
  • OBSERVATIONS - also make use of description
    ā€“ appealing to the five
    senses.
  • DETAILS - entails analyzing which is the
    process of breaking down a
    concept or idea into its
    constituent parts.
