Types of plate boundaries

    Cards (6)

    • What is the Richter scale?
It measures the strength of an earthquake (magnitude). Usually measures 1-10 but can be higher or lower. It is objective and isn't based on what people think.
    • What is the Mercalli scale?
It measures the damage done by an earthquake. It is measured from 1-8 (I-VIII) and is subjective as it's based on what people think.
    • What is a destructive plate margin?
A destructive plate margin is a boundary where two tectonic plates (oceanic and continental) collide, resulting in the destruction and subduction of one plate beneath the other. Volcanoes and earthquakes form / take place here.
    • What is a conservative plate margin?
A conservative plate margin is a boundary where two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally without creating or destroying crust. Earthquakes take place here.
    • What is constructive plate margin?
Where two plates are moving apart causing new magma to reach the surface through the gap. This causes volcanoes to form.
    • What is a collision margin?
Where 2 continental plates collide, resulting in mountain ranges to form. For example, the Himalayas in Asia.
