  • Two-Process Model: Alternative Explanations for Avoidance Behaviour
Not all behaviour is related to anxiety reduction. Buck, 2010, said that some people with agoraphobia may not want to leave their house for safety reasons, rather than germs. This means that there are different motivations for avoiding a phobic stimulus. The two-process model suggests that avoidance is motivated by anxiety reduction. Alternative explanations needs to be considered to gain a complete understanding.
  • Two-Process Model: Incomplete Explanation of Phobias
Bounton said that evalutionary factors probably have an important role in phobias. We easily acquire phobias of things that would have been dangerous in the evolutionary past, such as snakes. It is adaptive to acquire these fears. Seligman said this biological preparedness. It is rare to acquire fears for something such as guns even though they pose more threat nowadays, we assume this is because they are new and we are not biologically prepared to deal with it. This concept of preparedness is a serious problem for the two process model.
