  • Law degree, join one of the four Inns of Court, A Bar Course (1 year), Called to the Bar, Pupilage (1 year apprenticeship, pupil works alongside a qualified barrister the pupil master), Tenancy in Chambers, Continual Professional Development, Qualified!
  • Candidates need to pass a Bar Course Aptitude Test (BCAT) before starting a course.
  • Candidates must complete an academic component and vocational component.
  • Criticism of BPTC (old system); Reduce risk of paying lots of money with no actual prospect of becoming a barrister.
  • Taking silk; Barristers remain ‘junior’ unless made ‘KC’ (King’s Counsel). Eligible after 10 years. (Solicitors can too.)
  • Can be promoted to judiciary.
