  • Believe death isn’t the end, but change from one state of being to another.
  • Believe when Jesus died on cross = he paid price for our sins, and when rose from dead = he defeated death (power over death)
  • Due to this, Catholics can hope to go to heaven after death and spend eternity with God = ETERNAL LIFE
  • They believe soul lives on after physical death - a spiritual aspect, part that connects with God (other species don’t have)
  • ENSOULMENT - the moment when soul is believed to enter the body while in womb.
  • Bible teaches God is the Divine Judge and on Judgement Day (death), he will decide who will be rewarded with eternal life in paradise (heaven) and who is punished (hell).
  • Those who believe in Jesus and lived good life = taken to heaven BUT those who have rejected God’s love and cause harm to others = sent to hell
  • Judgement shown in Parable of the Sheep and Goats.
  • Teaching focuses on INDIVIDUAL JUDGEMENT :
    • Each individual will be judged on how they have lived their life.
  • Teaching focuses on FINAL JUDGEMENT:
    • When all of humanity will be raised and each person’s body and soul will be reunited - here, everyone will be judged by Christ (who will have returned in all his glory).
  • Believe after death, we will experience a ‘bodily resurrection’ - known as Jesus came back to life physically.
  • St Paul states after our deaths, we will be raised as spiritual bodies, not just disembodied souls.
