Anaerobic

Cards (11)

  • The incomplete breakdown of glucose, making lactic acid
  • Glucose -> Lactic Acid
  • Doesnt transfer as much energy as glucose isnt fully oxidised
  • Increased rate of anaerobic respiration = increased production of lactate
  • Plant and yeast cells respire but they produce ethanol
  • (Fermentation) - glucose -> ethanol +carbon dioxide
  • Anaerobic respiration causes an oxygen debt
  • Oxygen debt - the ammount of extra oxygen needed to break down the build up of lactic acid
  • The more intense exercise, the greater the amount of lactic acid produced
  • This means the pulse and breathing rate stay high whilst there are high levels of lactic acid.
  • Blood from the muscles can carry lactic acid to the liver, the lactic acid is then converted back to glucose
