  • How it works:
    1. Each voter gets two votes
    2. the person who gets over 50% on the first vote wins - if no one wins that then everyone is eliminated except the top two
    3. second votes are counted
    4. the candidate with the most first and second vote wins

    2. promotes a two - horse race- 2021 election everyone was eliminated except the two people
    3. makes sure a no one who is hated wins- due to the second preference they don't mind the other person
  • 3 advantages of SV
    1. winning candidate can usually claim to have a majority win
    2. simple to understand
    3. all votes are relevant
  • 3 Drawbacks to SV
    1. promotes a two party system - smaller partties have little chance of winning
    2. winner may only win by the second choice as they may not have had more votes on the first section
    3. can still result in wasted votes if a voter does not choose either of the candidates who make it to the second round
