  • charachtter essay intro
The protagonist of the novel, Randle Patrick McMurphy is a bold character who disrupts the peace in the ward. He is naïve at the start of the novel, unaware that Nurse Ratched, who runs the hospital can keep him there for as long as she likes. We follow his behaviour and how it changes throughout the novel after finding out he is committed and cannot leave at his own discretion.
  • character conc
Overall, even though McMurphy’s courage and fight against rebellion lead to his death, he leaves a large impact on the ward. He instils a sense of rebellion among the patients, motivating them to oppose Nurse Ratched's authority and stand up for themselves. He gave his power to all the patients in his death, he was a true saviour to the men. He is a symbol of freedom and hope, which teaches readers that they should never give up and good can always overcome evil.
