    • Traditionally a minister who works in a non-religious institution such as a hospital, prison, school or university.
    • Role = Provide pastoral care for the people (e.g. the prisoners, pupils or patients).
    • More recently, chaplains don't have to be religious.
    • Role = Give counselling, support them through rehabilitation, help with any spiritual or religious needs. 
    • Prisoners can share including fear, guilt, loneliness or worries about their family. The chaplain can be a point of contact for the person’s family.  
    • Chaplain can help inmates re-enter the community after their sentence, and liaise with parole officers.
