  • Psychologists distinguish between stm and ltm
  • we store but only rather briefly - for example, if you phone someone up you remember their phone number only while dialling but then number is forgotten; example of stm
  • long term memories last longer and can retrieve them later on after hours, days or even years
  • Aim : See if there was a difference in type of encoding used in stm and ltm
  • Method : Participants were given lists to read aloud and recall immediately afterwards
