• advantage to using ice cores:

  they are very accurate and are uncontaminated by people (Antarctica).
• disadvantage to ice cores:

  They are expensive
• advantage to sea ice positions:

  accurate as the thickness and exact position of the ice can be seen
• disadvantage to sea ice positions:

  only have 50 years of data
• advantage to global temperature data:

  there is lots of data (300 years)
• disadvantage to global temperature data:

  Does not take into account the temperature of the sea and recordings are often taken from artificially warm urban areas.
• advantage of paintings and diaries:

  usually dated and it's easy to track the location
• disadvantage of paintings and diaries:

  they are subjective and not always true
• advantages of glacial retreat:

  Results are clear
• disadvantages of glacial retreat:

  There are not many around and it is hard to find the exact location to compare from
• advantage of changing seasons:

  Easy to see growing seasons (MET office data), and it is quick and cheap
• disadvantage of changing seasons:

  Can be subjective and doesn't give much data
• advantage of tree rings:

  Easy to see and do
• disadvantage of tree rings:

  Can only be done in places with distinct weather differences between seasons so not everywhere ( around equator trees grow all year round so don't have rings)
