Colonialism and Imperialism

• Colonialism - establishment, maintaining, aquiring and expanding colonies in one territory by people from another
• Colonialism - involves the settlement of a new group of people in the colonized area
• Colonialism - involves the imposition of their culture, laws, and way of life on the indigenous population
• Imperialism - extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other territories and people.
• Imperialism - the policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force
• Imperialism - when a powerful country takes control of a weaker country
• Exploitation Colonialism - involves the exploitation of resources and labor in a colony for the benefit of the colonizing power
• Settler Colonialism - the Colonizers send settlers to permanently set or inhabit the colonized territory. They usually outnumber the locals in order to establish new societies with their own laws and governance.
• Surrogate Colonialism - compliance of native rulers with the dominance of the foreign power. 
• Internal Colonialism - involves the conquering of a minority group within a larger society often for economic or political gain
