    Charles must pay the Scottish army £850 a day for stopping in England so he had to keep parliament open

    Abolished ship money without parliamentary consent
    Charles had to call a parliament every three years and should last a minimum of 50 days. If the King didn’t do this, the written legal order for calling parliament would be automatically done by the lord chancellor.
    Ensured that there would not be another period of Personal Rule.

  • Charles' reaction to the 10 propositions
    Charles does not agree to this – parliament have now become so bold they are involving his personal life and family.
  • reasons for division in the royalist party
    - preventing personal rule – MPs could agree that they didn’t want personal rule again but differences were brought about on how to prevent repetition and what to put in place (parliament more extreme, royalists want king to still have power)
    - Bill of attainder – some saw it as constitutionally dangerous.
    - Religion – the roles of bishops was disagreed on, moderates became scared that radical actions and beliefs (e.g. pym) posed more of a threat to political order rather then Charles. Moderate reaction 1640-1642 labelled constitutional royalism.
