Counterbalancing

Cards (3)

  • Counterbalancing is only used for repeated measures
  • How: To counter balance, "all" participants are divided into "two subgroups". "Subgroup 1" would do "condition A" first and then "condition B". "Subgroup 2" will have participants in "condition B" first and then "condition A". This balances out order effects between both conditions
  • Why: Counterbalancing is used in repeated measures in order to balance out order effects, which is when participants in latter conditions may perform worse due to boredom or fatigue, between conditions. We can be more certain that the changes in the DV are due to the IV manipulation rather than order effects e.g. boredom or fatigue
