Earthquakes happen when underground rocks break along fault lines, causing the ground to shake. This releases energy in the form of seismic waves that travel outwards from the source (focus) of the earthquake.
Magnitude: This measures the energy released at the source and is the same everywhere. (Richter scale)
Intensity: This measures the shaking strength at a specific location and can vary depending on distance from the epicenter (surface location above focus) and ground conditions.
