Tropical Rainforests

Cards (9)

  • The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long. It is known for its dense canopies of vegetation that form three different layers. The top layer or canopy contains giant trees that grow to heights of 75 m (about 250 ft) or more.
  • Rainforests receive the most rain of all of the biomes in a year! A typical year sees 2,000 to 10,000 millimeters of rain per year.
  • Tropical rainforests have very moist but nutrient-poor soil. Because there is so much rain, most of the rain leaches nutrients from the soil. Soil is often reddish because of high iron levels.
  • The rainforests biodiversity is rich in abundance and has created an ecosystem of over 3,000 plant species.
  • Tropical rainforests are mainly located between the latitudes of 23.5˚N (the Tropic of Cancer) and 23.5˚S (the Tropic of Capricorn)—the tropics. Tropical rainforests are found in Central and South America, western and central Africa, western India, Southeast Asia, the island of New Guinea, and Australia.
  •  Leaching is the loss of soluble substances and colloids from the top layer of soil by percolating precipitation.
  • The average temperatures of tropical rainforests are between 21-30˚C
  • Tropical rainforests have a lot of rain and have quite a consistent warm temperature on climate graphs.
  • The altitude of tropical rainforests is generally quite low, about 1000m or less
